Adala Makhulo
Production Assistant

Tell us a time you were thankful for your department and why…
A time I was thankful for my department was during my first gig in Seattle as a Production Assistant. I had just moved to the city 4 months prior and had been looking widely for the creative community there, as the city is widely dominated by tech companies. Luckily, I got to be a Production Assistant for a commercial that was happening in the city. The majority of individuals there already knew each other and had worked together before, but everyone in my department was so encouraging and friendly towards me! I had a great time getting to know people working in the industry in Seattle, as well as playing a part in bringing a commercial to life. I'm thankful to have found people who share similar passions to me, and I'm excited to continue meeting people and growing in my craft.

Carlos Curevo
Cinematographer

Arriving in the U.S. as an immigrant, breaking into the cinematography scene felt like taking on a wild adventure. I left my home country, the industry I knew and plunged into a new world. At first, it was tough and I didn’t have that many contacts. But my determination kept me going, and I was fortunate to break into the industry. I quickly learned the power of teamwork as the head of the camera department. I couldn't do it all alone. That's when I met the camera operators and skillful assistants who became my lifeline. We weren't just colleagues; they were collaborators, friends, and more. We faced challenging shoots, demanding directors, and unpredictable weather together. As we tackled these obstacles, our synergy became pure magic on screen. What's beautiful is that we grew not just as professionals but as people. I learned from them, they learned from me, and our diverse backgrounds added flavor to our work. Looking back, I'm incredibly thankful for the opportunities and the amazing people who've been part of my journey. We may come from different corners of the world, but our shared love for great images and stories transcends borders. The U.S. may have been a challenging start, but it's also where I found my people in this exciting cinematic adventure.

Katie Irish
Costume Designer

My last show was a 19th century drama which was a huge undertaking for the Costume Department. I had three of the most amazing assistant designers you could ever asked for, and they had all their responsibilities so well covered that I could really focus on the design. The rest of the Costume and Wardrobe Departments really stepped up to make everything happen, and I could not be prouder of what we put on screen. It really does take a village!

Every time I work on the beach I'm thankful for all the heavy lifting and professionalism. Trudging around on sand all day while the ocean beckons is hard work, but my crew always has a smile on their faces no matter how many times we need to move something in the sand.

Sharon Samuels
Art Director

I worked on a project that was not going well from a production standpoint. The Art/Set Dec/Props departments banded together to make it through. We were all there to support each other and banded together to help each other in any way we could. It did not matter what was going on we all had the one goal of putting on the best product possible. The project ended up losing some key people, but with everyone going above and beyond, even though those losses were felt, we were able to move on and complete the work.

Shiran Amir

Editor

I am thankful for the craft of editing helping to put together and polish the end result to make all the other departments shine. I am thankful for the Editors Guild to help protect my rights and have proper compensation for my work. Lastly, I am thankful for my fellow Editors Guild members who have been stepping up to support each other in these tough times of work stoppage.

Vanessa Plaza Lazo
Production Designer

I'm thankful for my department all the time. My team is my support and the people that make my visual ideas in Art Department come to life. Without them, my ideas would just be drawings, sketches, and digital scenarios. I'm also thankful for each one of their personalities, besides their amazing talent to make the dream work, they add an amazing, fun, and eclectic spark to our days to make them very enjoyable. To me, one of the best parts of this job is the people you get to work with.
